iStock_000051074990_LargeIf you’ve been to a specialty pet store, you’ve probably seen the aisles of adorable pet clothing. There’s so much variety in design, fabric, and color that you may start to wonder: should your pet wear clothes?

This is surely a modern conundrum, as animals have survived the elements long before we domesticated them and became best friends. However, with the right combination of comfort and utility (along with your pet’s acceptance), pet clothing can turn a windy afternoon walk into a full-fledged giddy-up and go.

Different Breeds and Needs

There are many thick-coated breeds that not only enjoy the cooler temperatures, they relish the snow, ice, and wind. Hardy breeds, such as Malamutes, Huskies, the Leonberger, and St. Bernard’s, have very protective coats that don’t allow water or freezing winds to penetrate easily.

Smaller pets and those with shorter coats feel very exposed to the weather and may opt to spend the majority of time indoors during colder months. Chihuahuas, Greyhounds, and small terriers may benefit greatly from a protective coat or sweater, as well as senior pets suffering from arthritis.

Another group of pets that can benefit from pet clothing are those with itchy skin or allergies. Covering up part of the body with a shirt, vest, or sweater can restrict chewing, licking, and scratching. Likewise, if you or a family member is allergic to pet dander, clothing can help trap some of it. The clothing can then be laundered and removed instead of being spread around the home.

The Right Pet Clothing

The good news is there’s no shortage of styles for you to choose from. Looking for raingear or a fleece-lined vest? Check. Protective boots? You got it. Just make sure you get these measurements before purchasing pet clothing:

  • Weight
  • Neck circumference
  • Around the largest part of your pet’s chest
  • Distance between the neck and waist

For safety’s sake – and to get the most out of your pet’s new garment – make sure the item fits snugly. The clothing should neither restrict your pet’s movements, nor be so loose that he or she slips out of it. Pet clothing should never drag or have straps that get caught on things.

Material Pet

Have you ever worn a sweater that looked great but made you itch like crazy? Your pet would probably appreciate a soft, breathable fabric that doesn’t rub him or her the wrong way. Plus, you’ll want to be able to launder any pet clothing, so that cute wool sweater might not be the best all-around option.

Getting Started

While it’s easier to start gearing up your pet when he or she is a young puppy, most pets can accept clothing with a little time and patience. However, if your pet seems baffled or upset, please give him or her adequate space to get accustomed to the new duds. Never force your four-legged friend to wear pet clothing, even if you feel it’s for his or her own good.

All Kinds of Weather

Whether it’s rain boots to splash around in, snow boots for your trip to Aspen, or a waterproof vest for river hopping, pet clothing is available in a wide variety of styles.
