5 Ideas for Celebrating Halloween with Pets – Safely!
It’s that time of year again! Whether you’ve been stocking up on decorations since they hit the shelves or you’re just now figuring out costumes and trick-or-treating routes, there’s no doubt that the Halloween season is upon us.
It’s only natural to want to include your furry friends in on the fun, but not all pets are as excited about lit jack-o-lanterns and tiny ghosts and goblins as we are. Not to mention, Halloween can be a scary and dangerous time of year for our animal companions.
Your team at Leon Valley Veterinary Hospital has come up with some safe, fun, and decidedly non-spooky ways to celebrate Halloween with pets!
5 Ways to Celebrate Halloween with Pets
Many pets aren’t keen on crowds, people in costume, and scary decorations, but there’s still plenty of safe, pet-friendly fun to be had.
- Dress them up – A pet in costume is certainly cute, but safety should always come first. Make sure costumes fit properly and don’t restrict your pet’s breathing, vision, or movement. Remove the costume immediately if your pet is showing signs of stress or agitation.
- DIY Halloween – Your pet should never eat candy, but that doesn’t mean they can’t enjoy a Halloween treat or three. Whip up a batch of Halloween treats for your furry pal, or try making them a DIY Halloween toy to enjoy on this special day.
- Enjoy a fall getaway – Autumn is a gorgeous time of year and the perfect opportunity for a day trip to see the changing leaves. Bring a leash and some waste baggies and head for one of the many parks and natural areas in and around San Antonio. End the day snuggled up on the couch with some hot cocoa and a spooky movie.
- Try a pet-friendly pumpkin patch – If your dog is friendly and well behaved, why not grab the kids and head to your local pet-friendly pumpkin patch? Sip apple cider, pick out your pumpkins, and let the kids play while your dog gets some fresh air and a lot of exciting new smells.
- Host a pet Halloween party – Invite your friends and their pets over for a Halloween themed “pet party”. Pass out orange bandanas at the door (for the pets, of course), make sure to provide plenty of pet and people friendly snacks, and don’t forget to take lots of photos!
