Cute little cat with green eyesCats have truly unforgettable qualities, skills, and abilities. From crazy feline acrobatics to stealthy hunting madness, cats are all that and a bag of catnip-flavored chips. In light of all the wonderful things cats bring to our lives, the tenets of proper cat health can get a bit upstaged. There’s a great deal we can do to change the perception that cats are independent and self-sufficient – and it starts with these five important reminders!

  1. Bait and Switch – Unfortunately, when cats get infected with heartworm disease, diagnosis is difficult and treatment is impossible. One of the most important things to remember is that indoor-only pets aren’t immune to parasites and disease. Sure, limiting exposure to outdoor threats (such as fights with other animals or automobile accidents) is a great idea, but fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes can still find their way inside your home.
  2. The Cat’s in the Bag – Due to their mysterious and sometimes aloof natures, cats have a reputation for being untrainable. However, cats can learn to perform various tasks, including crate training, which contributes to environmental enrichment and stimulation. Plus, crate training allows your cat his or her own safe space and makes it easier to travel in the car. Once your cat is crate trained, you’ll notice how enjoyable a car ride can be together.
  3. Wellness Visits for Cat Health – Positively introducing a kitten to the idea of regular wellness exams can impact how they perceive the experience as an adult or senior cat. Many owners give up on convincing their cat that getting in the crate and car are actually good for them, and we understand the struggle is very real. However, for long term cat health, routine wellness visits are essential.
  4. Early Detection – Cats are exceptional self-preservers. This means they will intrinsically hide any signs of weakness, no matter how small or subtle. While domestic felines may not be averse to getting the care they need, they simply can’t help but listen to their inner natures, hiding signs of illness or injury. As a result, your cat’s regularly scheduled wellness visits become even more important, as we strive to catch any problems before they spiral out of control.
  5. Cats Need Multifaceted Care – Contrary to popular belief, cats do need – and greatly benefit from – attention to each detail of cat health. Feline diet and nutrition, exercise, mental stimulation and enrichment, dental care, and disease prevention (including vaccinations) are all major parts of the equation. When paired with our comprehensive veterinary care, your constant love and affection create the best defense against illness or injury.
