In It for the Long Haul: Moving with Pets
There are many reasons moving is considered one of modern life’s most stressful events. Between finding a new home, deciding what to keep and what to get rid of, packing, and transferring your insurance, utilities, and important documents, the process can be dizzying and overwhelming. Throw a pet or two into the mix, and things quickly go from crazy to crazier.
With a little planning and preparation, however, moving with pets can be done with relative ease, and your friends at Leon Valley are here to help!
Plan, Plan, Plan!
Planning for how best to relocate your pet should begin as soon as you know you are going to move. The distance you will need to travel to get to your new home, as well as how many and what types of pets you have, will all come into play when you are deciding how to transport your furry family members.
Planning in advance for their safety and comfort during the journey is crucial:
- By car – Map out your route ahead of time, making sure to secure pet-friendly accommodations and plan for rest/exercise stops in advance. Pack extra food and water for your pet.
- By plane – Research airlines carefully and choose one that has a reputation for taking the special needs of traveling pets into consideration. Make sure to complete all of the airline’s requirements for travel as far in advance as possible.
Getting Them Ready
Change can be difficult for many pets, and preparing them will go a long way toward easing stress and anxiety:
- If your pet is not acclimated to his or her crate, begin this process as far in advance of the move as you are able.
- Keep your pet’s daily routine (mealtimes, exercise, play, etc.) as close to normal as possible.
- Take time each day to connect with your little buddy! Moving is hard on everyone, and sharing a few minutes of one-on-one time may be just the thing you both need to help you manage the rest of the day.
The Big Day
Keep pets in a quiet room with the door shut as boxes are being loaded out of the house to prevent an accidental escape and to reduce stress. If possible, exercise your pet ahead of time so that he or she is tired and ready to relax when the movers arrive.
Settling In
Try to begin using your pet’s familiar food and water bowls, bedding, toys, and other favorite items as soon as you arrive in your new home. Being surrounded by familiar sights and smells can help ease your pet into the process of acclimating to a new environment.
