Celebrating Earth Day as an Eco-Friendly Pet Owner
As Kermit once lamented, “It’s not easy being green.” Many of us drive cars, collect plastic bags by the thousands, and occasionally don’t scoop the poop (cringe). However, being an eco-friendly pet owner can be a lot easier by making a few simple choices.
7 Ways to Make a Difference as an Eco-Friendly Pet owner
- Reuse and recycle toys, beds, and other items. If your pet was the recipient of several toys this Easter, consider donating some unused items to your favorite shelter. Organizations are always in need of beds, bowls, toys, and other gently used pet supplies. If you’re the crafty type, try your hand at turning old t-shirts and linens into DIY pet toys, beds, and blankets.
- Forego the car and walk. Given how busy life can be, we understand the temptation to drive to your local dog park. However, being a more eco-friendly pet owner means cutting down on pollution and getting some extra exercise by walking. We’re sure Fido won’t mind!
- Help control pet overpopulation. Although we adore our loveable fur friends, pet overpopulation remains a problem with millions of animals in shelters and on the streets. This also aids in the spread of disease, parasites, and other health problems. Pet adoption along with spaying or neutering improves our community, the environment, and the animals we all care about.
- Keep your pet healthy. Vaccinate your pet and maintain a monthly parasite preventive schedule to stop the spread of illnesses. Many bacteria and parasites can impact water sources, so do your eco-conscious duty and support the optimal health of your fur friend.
- Minimize your pet’s impact. Every year, domestic cats (and dogs) kill millions of birds. Become a more eco-friendly pet owner by reducing this impact on wildlife. Keep your dog leashed and supervise pets when they are outside.
- Get rid of waste the eco-friendly way. In addition to scooping the poop, did you know you can also compost pet waste? You can purchase any number of pet waste composters that are easy to install and user-friendly. Also opt for biodegradable bags to pick up your dog’s poo. Regular plastic bags can take up to 1,000 years to decompose!
- Make your own pet treats. Many store bought treats are full of preservatives and rely on manufacturing that can be detrimental to the environment. Instead, consider making one of the hundreds of organic, healthy, and delicious pet treat recipes online.
April is the month to celebrate the wonders of the natural world. Many of us are fond of both animals and nature, so we hope our tips for being a more eco-friendly pet owner were helpful.
