New Things We’ve Learned About Pets This Year
Dogs are smarter than cats – Say it isn’t so, says so many cat lovers. However, there is new research that shows that dogs have twice as many neurons as cats, leading to the conclusion that dogs are the smarter species. If you have both cats and dogs, do you believe this one?
Your cat really does love you – For everyone who thinks that cats are aloof, we found a study that shows that cats do, in fact, prefer human interaction to food, toys, and scent. Cuddle that kitty!
Dogs can smell disease – Dogs are being used more and more to provide assistance to people who have medical problems. Research in the Schillerhoehe Hospital in Germany found that dogs can smell changes in certain organic compounds in the human body, which foreshadow cancer, diabetic attacks, and even epileptic seizures. Is there nothing our dogs can’t do?
Dogs can be soothed by classical music – There’s new evidence that classical music can help soothe dogs. Researchers tested this hypothesis by playing classical music (versus no music) and found less barking and pacing when the music was played. Does your dog like Bach?
Cats and their owners have a secret language – Any cat owner will tell you that they can understand their cat’s requests by the different meows and sounds their cats make. There is a difference in tone, from “I’d like a snack” to “I’m starving! Feed me now!” Some researchers believe that this communication is specific to the cat and the person involved. Talk about a secret language!
