iStock_000020590750_LargeIs your dog patiently waiting for you to finish shopping, decorating, checking of the list of December to-dos, and wrapping gifts? Has your cat been cleverly waiting for you to retire for the evening, only to go ballistic on the decorations? Maybe this is a signal that your pets – as well-behaved as they are – may need a bit of attention and fun time during the holidays, too.

After all, they are a part of the family and sharing some seasonal joy with loved ones is what this time of year is all about!

Smiles with Santa

As luck would have it, many popular pet supply department stores feature month-long photo ops with Santa Claus for pets, large and small, as well as local malls and other retail shops. Call in advance to inquire about dates and times available. Bring Fido is another good resource for local pet-friendly events this month. If you missed your neighborhood Santa photo shoot, you can also enlist the help of a professional portrait photographer, or recruit a family member to pose as Santa and start snappin’ those adorable pics!

Dazzling Display

If you and your family love to stroll along the sidewalks looking at the wonderland of lights, why not include your best canine? Whether you’re staying in the ‘hood or strolling along the River Walk/Paseo del Rio, your dog is sure to enjoy being included in the seasonal family fun.

Road Tripping

If crowds aren’t really you or your pet’s “thing”, consider going for a road trip to visit a family member, distant friend, or a favorite natural area this season. Make sure you prepare for your pet’s safe journey by planning ahead. Refer back to our blog post on Pet-Friendly Travel for a check-list of safety measures.

New Friends

Have you been considering adding another fur friend to the family? Want to share your home with a pet in need, but aren’t able to adopt. Fostering a shelter pet is a great way to encourage your pet’s social life and exercise, and help animals who are seeking forever homes.

It’s a Wrap!

Before you spend a small fortune on pet toys and treats, why not save some boxes and gift wrap and make them a part of the festivities? Your dog will love to rip up the wrapping alongside the other gift-opening family members and your cat will have hours of fun playing “hide-and-pounce” in those empty boxes. (Just be sure to remove any curly ribbon, string, bows, and other dangerous items that can be ingested.)

December is all about seasonal fun – from holiday parties, to feasting with friends and family, to ringing in the New Year! Including your pets in some of these pet-safe activities will certainly keep their spirits merry, jolly, and bright.

Happy holidays and best wishes from your friends at Leon Valley Veterinary Hospital!
