Honoring Canine Veterans Every Day, Every Year

As if dogs couldn’t get any cooler, they went ahead and figured out how to serve and protect soldiers in active war zones. This isn’t a new concept. In fact, the ancient ancestors of today’s modern military pups trained, scouted, and tracked in remarkably similar ways. Civilizations as far back as the mid-seventh century B.C. employed dogs to rush, fight, haul, and protect. Today’s canine veterans are equally capable (if not more so), and are also leaned on for emotional support.

Remembering the Fallen: Memorial Day and K9 Veterans

K9 veterans have served our country well.Memorial Day offers a unique opportunity for Americans to honor the brave men and women who have served our country at home and abroad. Observing a moment of silence for fallen soldiers, decorating a grave, or attending a ceremony is immensely important.

While we reflect on these sacrifices, the faithful, valiant contributions of thousands of military dogs should also be remembered. Without the aid of K9 veterans, the list of casualties would be much longer.

Back in Time

Memorial Day, or Decoration Day as it was previously called, was established to honor those Americans who gave their lives in service. More recently, the national holiday has evolved into an opportunity to thank those who are currently serving – or have retired from – active duty.   Continue…

A Salute to Our Canine Veterans

canine veteransVeterans Day is a time of remembrance, to pause and pay our respects to the courageous men and women who have served in the military. These incredible individuals have made significant sacrifices to ensure our rights, freedoms, and livelihood. Their dedication and sense of duty is felt and appreciated as we honor our veterans.

Also among these honorable individuals are our canine veterans! Canine veterans (or K9 veterans) are unsung heroes, often unknown to most people (although they’re starting to get the notice they deserve). At Leon Valley Veterinary Hospital, we want to salute these amazing dogs who also serve this country with dedication and bravery.
