At Leon Valley Hospital, we understand that San Antonio’s summers are a concern for humans and pets alike. As the mercury rises, so does the challenge of keeping our furry friends cool and comfortable. But with some knowledge and preparation, your beloved companions can enjoy the sunny season just as much as you do.

The pets we share our lives with are pretty predictable (despite significant evidence to the contrary), but then again, so are we. Whether bi-pedal or four-legged, we like certain things to happen at particular moments of the day, or week, or month. Creatures, as it were, of habit. 

Veterinarians are responsible for the health and well-being of the animals and family pets in our community, and they deserve to be recognized and thanked for their compassion, care, and unwavering dedication to the animals and families they serve. 

As if dogs couldn’t get any cooler, they went ahead and figured out how to serve and protect soldiers in active war zones. This isn’t a new concept. In fact, the ancient ancestors of today’s modern military pups trained, scouted, and tracked in remarkably similar ways. Civilizations as far back as the mid-seventh century B.C. employed dogs to rush, fight, haul, and protect. Today’s canine veterans are equally capable (if not more so), and are also leaned on for emotional support.

While 2020 has been, shall we say… unpredictable, we can reliably count on two things: the final page of the calendar will turn to 2021, and the boundless love of our fuzzy little weirdos.

Indeed, our pets have been steadfast in their support this past year just as the team at Leon Valley Veterinary Hospital has been steadfast in our commitment to your pets’ health and well-being through all the ups and downs.

As you know, part of our ongoing commitment to you and your pets’ health and happiness is our blog. And we are excited to celebrate the date change with our top blogs list! Hopefully you enjoy a look back at our most-read blogs of 2020…

In the grand scheme of things, five years is a very small period of time. But a lot can change in 1,825 days. Think about how much incredible growth a baby experiences in the first five years! 

Not unlike a happy, easy-going tot, our veterinary hospital has had the good fortune to encounter lots of new furry faces and wet noses over the years. We’ve scratched a lot of ears, and shook more than a few paws. In other words, we love our jobs and appreciate the community of responsible pet owners that surround us. 

To thank you, we reached back all the way to our very first published blog. Since May of 2014, we’ve tried to top ourselves every week with more interesting, relevant, and timely content aimed at making your ownership experience even more meaningful. 

With the winter holidays just about over, our thoughts turn to the coming year. Where will we focus our energy and time? What can we improve upon from last year? What are our long term goals for ourselves and our families? These and other important questions abound, such as, how will we help our pets to feel their best?

One way we can help with that last question is through our pet care blog. Writing and publishing this blog is our pleasure, and hopefully gives San Antonio pet owners some informative tips on pet health and well-being, pet safety, and just a dose of occasional fun and silliness.

The story collection Winnie-the-Pooh was published 92 years ago by the British author A.A. Milne. Pooh (and his highly relatable group of friends in the Hundred-Acre Wood) not only soothed kids still shaken by the effects of war, but with his beautifully simple, yet philosophical, musings Pooh spoke to people of all ages. The characters still endure to this day, in part because we have a treasure trove of insightful quotes that remind us of what really matters in life.

As we prepare to close out the year, we can’t help but reflect on the things we’re grateful for. To quote Eeyore, “ A little consideration, a little thought for others, makes all the difference”. Our compassionate veterinary staff couldn’t agree more!

2016 is right around the corner, perhaps better put, it’s just a paw away. Resolutions creep into the mind this time of year and many of those evaporate wistfully with guiltless abandon. We hope that some of those fantastic resolutions have their way to sticking around for success in the coming year.
