In honor of Disaster Preparedness Month in September, Leon Valley Veterinary Hospital wants to challenge our readers. How knowledgeable are you about disaster preparedness for pet owners? Are you ready if something were to happen?

No one wants to think that a catastrophic event will touch their lives or the lives of those they know and love. It’s important to have a safety plan in place before disaster hits. Preparedness makes safety possible in many cases.

When it comes to homeless dogs, they’re all adoptable, right? What we mean is, all dogs deserve to be adopted into safe, nurturing, comfortable homes. Unfortunately, the fact remains that there are dogs out there that simply don’t appeal to every prospective dog owner. Whether it’s their age, coat color, health status, breed, or general appearance, a “less adoptable” dog depends on our ability to look beyond what’s on the surface. 

All the dogs want to know, will there be bone-broth cake during National Dog Week? Celebrate the week of September 20-27 with special treats for the dogs in your life and learn more about how to keep them happy and healthy. While almost everyone has heard of rabies as a disease, most of us have some dramatized concept of what it actually is. In honor of World Rabies Day on September 28, Leon Valley Veterinary Hospital would like to share a little bit about this devastating disease and why rabies vaccination for puppies and kittens (and adult animals as well) is so very important. 

In 2004, Colleen Paige founded National Dog Day to celebrate the day her family adopted their dog “Sheltie” from a local animal shelter when she was 10 years old. The spirit of National Dog Day was created in order to celebrate dogs, and spread awareness about adoption. 

This year on National Dog Day (August 26), let’s focus on ways to keep our four-legged friends happy and healthy for many National Dog Days to come. 

August is National Immunization Awareness Month for everybody, and that means pets, too! Your friends at Leon Valley Veterinary Hospital want to help you figure out what you need to know about pet vaccines so you can be sure your furry friends are protected and healthy.

August 15 is an important day for you and your furry family members. It’s National Check the Chip Day. On this day each year, we are reminded to check our pet’s microchips to make sure they are still functioning properly. It’s also a great day to remember to microchip your pets so they can be returned to you if they’re lost.

For cat owners and people that love the feline species in general, every day is a “cat day.” When we’re not with our cats, we’re probably thinking about them. As far as we’re concerned, kitties rule the roost and we wouldn’t have it any other way. 

Even with all the unofficial cat days, there is an International Cat Day to celebrate together. The International Fund for Animal Welfare created this worldwide event as a way to raise awareness. Every August 8th, people unite in order to improve the health and welfare of domestic cats around the world. What could be better than that?

It’s National Mutt Day on July 31st, and what better way for Leon Valley Veterinary Hospital to celebrate than to share a little bit about why we think they are the best. Join us in celebrating mutts today and every day!
